Absences/Appointments- To report your child’s absence, please call 1-855-203-2994 or go to http://yorkrdsb.schoolconnects.com even if you have written me a note.

Parent-teacher communication
• Remind App:
Please consider downloading this app to your devices as this will be our most efficient mode of communication. For more information, kindly read the attached information. Please return the approval form as soon as possible to start receiving our classroom updates.
• Agenda / light blue communication binder
You are encouraged to purchase an agenda for your child through School Cash Online for $4. Students will be responsible for recording their homework in daily. This will help them to become more responsible for organizing their own learning. The light blue folder is also something you should take a peek at every day.  Any parent reading will be placed in this folder along with any homework handouts your child may need.

• Newsletters:
Monthly newsletters will give you a little snapshot into our classroom. You’ll learn what our learning targets are, upcoming events and tips for how to help your child succeed in school.

• Classroom blog: http://jungrdps1718.blogspot.com
Please access the additional resources, classroom activity updates, digital version of the newsletters and more on our classroom blog. Links to the updates will be sent out via Remind as well for your convenient access.

Food Safety at RDPS

Please remember that we are a nut-free school and ensure you pack nutritious, nut-free snacks and lunches.  We have students with life-threatening allergies and students are not permitted to share snacks due to these health risks. Please discuss this important safety rule with your child.

Homework
When assigning homework, I do my best to ensure that it is “purposeful work.” Homework is intended to be study or practice of concepts already introduced at school, or, work to be done in preparation for concepts/projects we will be working on in future classes.
The following, taken from the Board’s New Homework Policy, is intended to show daily-recommended maximums across all subjects. I will be working with the other teachers to ensure we do not exceed these maximums.

Grade Daily maximum
Kindergarten 10 minutes
Grades 1-3 20 minutes
Grades 4-6 40 minutes
Grades 7-9 50 minutes
Grades 10-12 90 minutes

In order to be successful with their homework completion, students require their learning materials and a quiet work area. Parent supervision is recommended to ensure students remain on the task at hand. Students may also need breaks in between to help them focus. We hope these guidelines are helpful for you and your child. Please let me know if they experience difficulty so I can go over it with them again at school.

Physical Education / Music / Social Studies
There are other teachers who will also be teaching your child.  Any questions about these subjects should be discussed with the following teachers:
      • M Falcao (Ext. 232)
- Physical Education (day 2 & 3) - Running shoes are mandatory and appropriate clothing should be worn.
- Music (day 4).

      • M Coburn (Ext. 231) - Social Studies

Note: There is a weekly teaching schedule is in the light blue communication binder for your reference.

Do I need to send in school supplies?

The school will be supplying most of the classroom materials needed for your child this year (e.g..). Here is a list of supplies you will need to provide:

Indoor Shoes – For example, non-marking running shoes for physical education. Note that Heelys shoes are prohibited and shoes with blinking lights can be distracting in class.
A change of clothes (shirt, pants, underwear, socks) in a labelled Ziploc bag that can be kept at school in case of need (especially socks for winter).
Comfortable earphones that you child can keep in the classroom for his/her own use.  Kindly label these with their name. These will be stored in a special place to be retrieved only when they are needed for an academic task.
1-2 boxes of Kleenex will be very much appreciated.
A labelled re-usable water bottle instead of disposable plastic bottles.
Most of the classroom materials are provided for the children (e.g., workbooks, pencils, erasers, scissors, glue etc.), however, two one-inch ring binders (any colour except for light blue, $1-3 at Dollarama or Wal-Mart) for your child to better organize his/her literacy and math materials would be very helpful.

Reading
Independent French reading at home is a key element to successful language development.  In class, I run an incentive program to help motivate students to read more at home.  Kindly initial all the logged sessions your child has recorded in their reading log so he/she can benefit from the program.

Library
We will be visiting the library every week (day to be determined). Students will be permitted to take two French books per week. Please remind children to take care of their library books and return them for the next library visit. (First visit in the 3rd week)

Thank you for your support and do not hesitate to contact me for any questions. Thank you.
