Science - Forces Unit Project

Today, a package of sheets that will be used throughout our project was sent home.

Students will be creating a toy that uses at least 2 forces that we have learned.

Page 2 describes expectations.

1. The toy should be mostly made of recycled materials.
2. The toy should not be a weapon or has dangerous (pointy, sharp) parts.
3. The toy includes moving parts that use at least two forces to move.
4. Students must think of the concepts discussed in class.
5. The toy should be visually pleasing, creative, clean and fun!
6. Students should be able to explain how they created the toy step by step.
7. Using science vocabulary, students should be able to explain how their toy works, what forces it uses, and what effect these forces have on its movement. - they will be having an oral presentation on their toy at the end of the project.

Students have done some research using Google Images where they looked up some examples using keywords such as:

"self-made toys" "jouets avec des matériaux de recyclage"

and made sketches of some ideas that interested them on the page 3.

Their homework today (21st) is page 4, where they will ask someone at home to share their ideas and get some advice (des conseils) from them to decide what they want to make.

Some materials that school will provide them with are:

Basic construction materials (glues, scissors, construction paper)
Hot glue (teacher will assist)
Strings, straws, paper plates, clips, elastic bands, paints, tapes, staplers.

Students are to use as much recycles materials as possible such as
boxes, bottles, bottle caps, etc.

Students can start bringing materials as soon as they have decided what they will make. Please make sure that all materials are contained in a bag and label the child's name on the materials that you want back home after the project is over.

November newsletter

Monday November 13, 2017

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

October passed by so quickly! Thank you so much for your ongoing support. We have had another successful month! Here are few updates in our class for the month of November.

Curriculum Corner:

Math
In Math, we’ve finished up our unit on Number Sense and we are beginning our Patterning unit. Please refer to the attached math newsletter.

Science
We continue to learn our unit about the forces we come across on a daily basis (muscular, magnetic, gravitational, etc.) and their effects, as well as how forces are used to improve our daily lives.

Language
In Literacy, we will be continuing sentences writing. We are working hard to apply everything we have learned so far about parts of speech and good sentences into our sentences.

In reading, we have started guided reading. We are focused on making connections and well supported predictions by using evidence from the text, picture and our prior knowledge.

Mark your calendars for these important dates:
Tuesday November 7, 2017 – Assembly: Peer Mediators explain their roles
Friday November 10, 2017 – Remembrance Day assembly
Thursday November 16, 2017 – Spirit Day, Sport/ Jersey
Wednesday November 22, 2017 - Progress Report Cards go home
Thursday November 23, 2017 - Parent Teacher Interview Night
Friday November 24, 2017 – No School (PA Day)/ Parent Teacher Interview (AM)

Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation,

Oral Presentation next week.

Today we started our presentation project where students will be creating a poster full of information about themselves and use it to make an oral presentation in front of the whole class.

In order for this project to be more engaging and meaningful for the students, I kindly ask parents to please send some pictures to be used for their work this week (week of Nov 6th). Note that this is not mandatory (students can use drawings).

The presentation schedule is as follows.

Monday 13th
Maliha, Matvey, Reine, Elyse, Valerie K.

Tuesday 14th
Ivan, Tyler, Valerie B, Matthew, Brian

Wednesday 15th
Liam, Angelina, Daniel, Hunter, Nathan

Thursday 16th
Evelyn, Katelyn, Lavi, Anne, Jayden

Some examples of pictures that can be useful are:

1. a picture of the student when s/he was just born / was a baby.
2. a picture of the student taken this year.
3. a picture of the student's family.
4. up to 3 pictures taken at the students' special moments (celebrations, family vacation, religious ceremonies, when siblings were born, etc. - Students chose 6 significant life events on their own. Please speak with your child to find out which events s/he has chosen.

A draft of their planning of the poster will be sent home tomorrow so that the student can discuss it with the parents/guardians and help select pictures.

The size of pictures does not matter as I will be using a colour printer to shrink them to a good size but if you have the option to print the pictures smaller than 8 cm x 11 cm, it will be ideal.

Your collaboration to improve student engagement in learning is always greatly appreciated.

Please send me a message via Remind App or agenda if you have any questions about this project.

Thank you.
