February newsletter

Thursday, February 1, 2018

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

As we begin the month of February, here are a few updates that are happening in our classroom!

Curriculum Corner:

Math
We will continue to work on our data management unit. The unit vocabulary sheets are in the student’s math binder. Students are encouraged to take the binder home and review the vocabulary throughout the unit. After this unit, we will start our operations unit where students will learn to do addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with bigger numbers.

Language
In Writing, we will continue our poetry unit and start a unit on letter writing. In Reading we will continue learning to make inferences. We are looking for clues in the pictures and text of the books we read to make conclusions about what will happen next in the story, what the characters may be feeling and the message the author is trying to send to the reader. Students will also learn to ask good questions to help their comprehension of texts.

Science
In Science, we will finish our unit on structures and start a new unit on the soil.

Health
In Health, we will be learning about healthy eating and oral hygiene.

Mark your calendars for these important dates:
Thursday, February 1, 2018 – Gregg le Rock Concert.
Friday, February 2, 2018 – PA day. No school.
Wednesday, February 7, 2018 – Winter Walk to School Day.
Week of February 12, 2018 – Primary Winter Carnival Week.
Wednesday, February 14, 2018 – Pink, Red and White Day.
Thursday, February 15, 2018 – Term 1 Report Cards go home.
Friday, February 16, 2018 – Lunar New Year (significant faith day) – No Homework or Test
Monday, February 19, 2018 – Family Day. No School.
Monday, February 26, 2018 – Term 1 Winit Assembly.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at the school (Ext. 224) or by written communication (Remind App or Agenda).

Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation.

math quiz Jan 26

Students need to be able to :

1. describe and name prisms and pyramids by the shape of their base.

2. identify 2D shapes that compose 3D shapes by visualizing and looking at different nets.

3. compare and sort prisms and pyramids by geometric properties (number of faces, edges, vertices)

4. solve word problems involving 3D shapes and their geometric properties.

Students will be allowed to use concrete math manipulatives during this assessment.

Students are encouraged to review pages 62-73 of their blue math book.

math quiz Jan 18th

For this week's math quiz, students need to be able to:

1. recognize the properties of 2D shapes and give a correct name of each.

Example :
Cette figure est un trapèze car je sais qu'un trapèze est un quadrilatère (a quatre côtés et quatre angles) et il a aussi une paire de côtés parallèles.

I know this figure is a trapeze because I know that a trapeze is a quadrilateral (has four sides and four angles) and it also has a pair of parallel sides.

2. know the difference between "figures regulière" and "figures irregulières". The former means that a form is made of sides that are of the same length and all its angles are the same.
More info on this concept in English: https://www.theschoolrun.com/what-are-regular-and-irregular-shapes

3. use a Venn diagram to organize different 2D shapes based on their attributes.
A game to practice sorting by attributes: https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/playgame/83

4. recognize and draw 2D shapes that are congruent (same size, same form)
An online game to practice this concept: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/geometry/shapeshoot/SSCongruentSimilar.htm

5. compose certain forms by using multiple smaller shapes (including using the tangram). For example, making a trapeze with 3 regular triangles.

Another tangram game online: https://www.turtlediary.com/game/tangrams.html

Thank you for your support.

Math quiz - Jan 10th

Students have been learning to describe 2D shapes using three attributes.

1. length of the sides (la longueur des côtés) and show the equal length sides using "les hachures"

2. parallel sides (l'orientation des côtés) and show the parallel saides using "les flèches"

3. angles (les angles) and show the angles using arcs (bigger or smaller than a right angle) and a small square (right angle)

Students should be able to

- describe a 2D figures using these attributes, using math vocabulary and full sentences.
- use geometry symbols (les hachures, les flèches et les arcs) to show attributes on 2D figures.
- draw figures that match a description.

Some key words includes

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you for your support.

January 2018 newsletter

Monday, January 8, 2018

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope you and your family had a wonderful winter break spending time with friends and family and relaxing! I am so excited to continue the school year learning with your child!
Once again, the school will provide all the necessary school supplies needed for the students for the rest of the year but it is always helpful to have extras. There are certain materials that we do ask that you provide for your child, which are the following:
- a pair of indoor running shoes (to be worn indoors only and to be kept at school)
- a change of weather appropriate clothing (in a labelled Ziploc bag – don’t forget the socks!)
- a reusable water bottle instead of disposable water bottles.

Cold weather: although the temperature fluctuates, students spend a good amount of time outside during the recess. Please make sure your child comes to school in appropriate clothing for the weather (hats, scarves, gloves, snow pants, boots, etc.). Please note that the office does not provide supervision for children who are too ill to go outdoors for the two recesses. Every student who comes to school must go out for recess unless there are injuries or special medical notes submitted to the office.

Curriculum Corner:

Math
We have begun our geometry unit and started looking at the ways to describe different 2D shapes using their attributes (length of sides, parallel sides, etc.). We will continue to examine different 2D and 3D shapes, describe them using attributes and solve related problems. We will also do a Data Management unit where we will classify shapes using a Venn diagram. This unit will also include an engaging survey project in which students will collect, represent and share data on a topic of their interest.

Science
Our second Science Unit will be Structures and Mechanisms (Strong and Stable Structures). Throughout the unit, we will be learning to identify, describe and compare various structures. We will learn about their importance, function and what might affect their strength and stability in our environment.

Language
In Writing, we will continue to work on our poetry unit where students will explore different types of poems and write their own using descriptive vocabulary. In Reading, we continue to work on different reading strategies such as asking questions while reading and summarizing key ideas of a text.

Health & Drama
We will do an integrated anti-bullying themed unit that connects to our health curriculum expectations (Healthy & unhealthy relationships / visible & invisible differences), where students will learn how bullying occurs, who takes part and how we can prevent it through art and drama.

Mark your calendars for these important dates:

January 16th – Lice check for entire school.
January 17th – Bully me no more magic show.
January 19th – PA day (No school).
January 23rd – Author visit (David Bouchard).
January 26th – Superhero / Disney day.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to remind message me or send a note in the agenda.

Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation.
